Rudraksha beads are the dried seeds of the Elaeocarpus ganitrus tree, which grows primarily in the Himalayan region. In Sanskrit, Rudraksha means 'the tears of Shiva'. Ancient Vedic texts describe these seeds as having profound electromagnetic properties that influence the human nervous system and the subtle energy body (Pranamaya Kosha).
The vertical lines running across the surface of a Rudraksha bead are called 'Mukhis' or faces. Each Mukhi corresponds to a different deity and a different planetary energy. For example, a 5 Mukhi bead represents Kalagni Rudra and is governed by Jupiter, making it ideal for mental peace and spiritual growth. A 7 Mukhi bead is associated with Mahalakshmi and Saturn, helping the wearer overcome financial hurdles and karmic delays.
A Rudraksha should be worn after a proper 'Pran Pratishtha' or consecration ceremony. It is traditionally strung on a red silk thread or in gold or silver. To maintain its vibration, it should be kept clean and oiled occasionally with sandalwood or olive oil. Most importantly, it should be worn with a sense of reverence and used as a tool for mindfulness and meditation.
